Recording phone calls manually.

• Select Modem from input device drop-down list.
• Press Record button to start recording. Press Stop button when finished. Program will hang up automatically if call is disconnected.

Recording all incoming phone calls automatically.

• Put checkmark at record all incoming calls checkbox. Program will detect and log Caller ID and start recording in at least 8 seconds after last ring (more info). This is to ensure that human has answered the call.
• Modem Spy can automatically notify remote party about recording (more info). The law in some countries requires it.

Answering Machine.

You can switch Modem Spy to answering machine mode. In this mode Modem Spy will:

• record telephone conversation if user picked up the phone first
• play back greeting and record a message if user has not picked up the phone for specified time (see below).

Program will mark records made by answering machine with >> prefix in Memo field.

Follow these easy steps to setup answering machine mode:

1. Select File / Preferences menu item
2. Select Recording tab
3. Enable Notify remote party about recording option
4. Press Browse button and select your greeting message
5. Enable Answer a call in NN rings option.
6. Press OK to save changes

Recording from a microphone.

• Select Sound Card from input device drop-down list.
• Press Record button to start recording. Press Stop button when finished.

Playing back recorded files.

• Select Sound Card or Modem from output device drop-down list depending on whether you want to playback via computer speakers or phone line.
• Press Playback button to start playing back. Press Stop to interrupt. Program will hang up when finished automatically.
• Disable dial tone waiting for your modem if you can not playback messages via phone line.

Recording from data modem.

• Modem Spy is capable recording telephone conversations from non-voice modem. You will need to connect your modem output and sound card line in jacks in order to enable this option.
• Go to Preferences and enable recording from sound card instead of modem.
• When Modem Spy receives a call, it will pickup the line and starts recording from selected device.

Recording phone calls using sound card.

• buy an adapter that connects phone line and sound card’s Line In jack.
• setup Do not use modem option at Preferences/Hardware.
• download and install Dictaphone plugin from modemspy.com website.
• The program will monitor sound activity and start recording as soon as it found voice energy in phone line.

Dialing phone numbers.

Select File/Dial phone number menu item in order to dial phone number and start recording right after dialing. You may use comma to specify pause when dialing. In the following example, program will make a pause before dialing 3: 2225577,,,3

Call logging.

Modem Spy automatically logs all incoming calls. To view the log, select File/Open Callers Log menu item. Select File/Reset Callers Log menu item if you want to reset callers log.
